Paul Newman

Paul Newman died yesterday. What a remarkable man. He earned his living through Hollywood, but didn't allow it to define him. He was generous, philanthropic, kind, talented as hell and pretty easy on the eyes (how hunky was he in Cool Hand Luke?).

I saw this at the end of the article from the Associated Press and was really touched:

He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood's rare long-term marriages. "I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?" Newman told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray.

My awesome boyfriend aside, do people like this still exist?

That's some bad hat, Harry.

This weekend, we learned of Roy Scheider's death. Very sad news. JAWS is one of my favorite movies. Of all time. It's in the top 3, possibly the top 2. Scheider played Brody's character so well, I can't begin to imagine another actor stepping into that role. That movie represents so much to me. It was shot in Massachusetts, for one. A lot of the extras were people who shared my zip code. The movie takes place in the 1970s, during my childhood, so the sights and sounds are very nostalgic. From the music wafting out of the radio on the beach to the fashions. The acting is superb and the suspense Spielberg created is like nothing I've ever experienced. Chief Brody was the character that the viewer "became," I think. Everyone around him was so extreme (except for Hooper, but Hooper was not exactly a guy who most people can relate to).

*sigh*

I'll Tear Your Mind Out. I'll Burn Your Soul.

Not that we didn't already know or suspect that this was true. I just cringe when I think about how this comes across globally.

Heath Ledger

That was shocking. It still hasn't really cemented. It's so difficult for me to imagine why, if you've got everything going for your way, someone would ingest all those pills. Either it was suicide (most doubt it, at this point) or it was accidental. I am not sure how a person can take so many drugs accidentally. I'm not even sure what sleeping pills are supposed to do for a person, anyway. Not being a drug taker myself, it's a little hard to figure out. What a shame.
